History
Tenerife South Airport, also known as Tenerife South–Reina Sofía Airport, is the larger of the two airports on the island of Tenerife. It is located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, about 60-68 kilometres from the island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The airport is situated in the most tourist-heavy area of the island and is the second busiest airport in the Canary Islands, handling over 11 million passengers in 2018 and setting a new record in 2024 with 13 million passengers. Combined with Tenerife's other airport, Tenerife North Airport (or Los Rodeos Airport), the island gathers the highest passenger movement of all the Canary Islands, with a combined 12,248,673 passengers in 2018.
In the late 1960s, the island authorities of Tenerife recognised the need for a second airport due to the adverse weather conditions frequently experienced at the original airport in the north of the island, which often led to low visibility. This issue was tragically exemplified by the events of the world's deadliest aviation accident in 1977, when two Boeing 747s collided on the runway at Los Rodeos, killing 583 people due in part to very low visibility.
With the disaster still fresh in people's minds, construction of the new airport proceeded quickly, and Tenerife South Airport was inaugurated in 1978 on 6 November by Queen Sofía of Spain, to whom the airport is dedicated. The first flight was an Iberia flight IB187 from Lanzarote, operated by a McDonnell Douglas DC-9.
Over the years, Tenerife South Airport has expanded its connections and now offers hundreds of connections to different parts of the world. In October 2002, Santa Bárbara Airlines commenced service to Reina Sofía Airport using a McDonnell Douglas DC-10. In June 2022, United Airlines launched a thrice-weekly service to Tenerife from Newark using a Boeing 757-200.
