O'Hare Airport was built in February 1944. During World War II, the site was originally known as Orchard Place and served as a manufacturing plant for Douglas C-54 Skymasters. The 2 million square feet (190,000 m2) plant was located in the northeast corner of what is now the airport, and it needed easy access to the workforce of Chicago, railroads, and a location far from enemy threats. 655 C-54s were built at the plant, more than half of all produced. The airfield, from which the C-54s flew out, was known as Douglas Airport and initially had four 5,500-foot (1,700 m) runways.
In 1945, the facility was chosen by the city of Chicago as a site to meet future aviation demands. In the mid-1940s, it was renamed Orchard Field Airport and assigned the IATA code ORD.
