He completed six weeks of ground school training at the University of California, Berkeley, and primary flight training in San Diego, where he was the only remaining student out of 15 to qualify.

Love wrote many letters home while serving in World War I, some of which have been donated to the Sharlot Hall Museum's Archives in Prescott, Arizona. In one letter, he wrote about his experience with powered flight, saying that he felt "just as safe up in the air 1500 to 2000 ft. as if I was walking on the ground and a great deal safer than I have often felt in crossing some city streets."
