The hotel's history

The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Miami, is a luxury hotel with a rich history. The hotel was built in 1926 by land developer George E. Merrick, in collaboration with John McEntee Bowman of the Bowman-Biltmore Hotels. Merrick, who is known as the founder of Coral Gables, envisioned a hotel that would be a "center of sports and fashion". The $10 million project was announced in November 1924 and construction was completed in less than 14 months.

The Biltmore Hotel opened to the public in January 1926, becoming the tallest building in Florida at 315 feet. The hotel featured a grand pool, which was once the largest in the world, and hosted fashion shows, gala balls, and aquatic shows. Notable guests included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, and Al Capone. Franklin D. Roosevelt even had a temporary White House office set up at the hotel during his vacation in Miami.

In September 1926, just months after the hotel opened, the 1926 Miami Hurricane struck. The hotel provided shelter for over 2000 survivors, but the disaster signalled the end of the Florida land boom. Merrick's company declared bankruptcy in 1929, and his stake in the hotel was bought out by Bowman. The hotel changed hands a few more times over the years and faced financial difficulties during the Great Depression.

During World War II, the War Department took over the hotel and converted it into a 1200-bed hospital. After the war, it was renamed Pratt General Hospital and remained a Veterans Administration Hospital until 1968. The University of Miami also used the building as the early site of its School of Medicine.

After the hospital closed in 1968, the hotel remained vacant for many years. In 1973, the City of Coral Gables gained ownership of the hotel through the Historic Monuments Act and Legacy of Parks program. The city initiated a full restoration in 1983, and the Biltmore reopened as a grand hotel in 1987. However, it closed again in 1990 due to an economic downturn.

A new era began in 1992 when the Seaway Hotels Group took over operations and embarked on a $40 million renovation project. Today, the Biltmore Hotel continues to be a symbol of elegance and sophistication, offering a blend of timeless elegance and modern amenities.
