Cat Bi International Airport (HPH) is located in Hai Phong, Vietnam, between the Chinese border and Hanoi. The airport has a long history of military use during the Indo-China War and the Vietnam War.
The airport was originally built by the French and used as a base for their regional air force. During the war, the Cat Bi Air Base was used by the French Air Force, with units including the Group de Chasse 2/22 Languedoc, Bomber Squadron 1/19 Gascogne, and Bomber Squadron 1/25 Tunisie. In November 1953, the United States Air Force flew C-119s from Clark Air Base to Cat Bi to qualify French Air Force crews. In December 1953, the USAF deployed detachments of the 483d Troop Carrier Wing, the 8081st Aerial Resupply Unit, and a provisional maintenance squadron to Cat Bi as part of Operation Cat Paw.
After the retreat of western forces in 1954, the airport became an airfield for the Vietnam People's Air Force. During the Vietnam War, the runway and terminal building were bombed by American Forces. Following the war, the airport was relegated to a small regional airport, serving local residences and occasional military aircraft.
In recent years, the airport has undergone significant upgrades. In 2016, the Vietnamese government completed the first phase of a master plan to upgrade the airport, which included extending the second runway to accommodate wide-body long-haul aircraft and constructing a new terminal building.
