Birsa Munda was a prominent freedom fighter, tribal leader, and religious leader. He dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of indigenous communities against colonial repression. He was born on November 15, 1875, in Ulihatu, in the present-day state of Chhattisgarh, India, into a humble family of farmers from the Munda tribe, one of the indigenous Adivasi communities of the region.

On March 3, 1900, he was arrested by the British police while sleeping with his tribal guerrilla army at Jamkopai forest in Chakradharpur. He died on June 9, 1900, at the young age of 25 while in captivity. The actual reasons behind his death remain a mystery.
In recognition of his impact on the national movement, the state of Jharkhand was created on his birth anniversary in 2000.
