It is one of two international airports in Karnataka

Mangalore Airport, officially known as Mangalore International Airport, is one of the two international airports in the state of Karnataka, the other being Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Located about 13 km from the city centre of Mangalore, it is the second busiest airport in the state in terms of passenger traffic and aircraft movement. The airport serves as a focus city for Air India Express and is a gateway to the coastal region of Karnataka, providing vital connectivity to the region.

The history of the airport can be traced back to the 1940s when it was a simple airstrip used by the Tata Airlines, the predecessor of Air India. Over the years, the airport has undergone several upgrades and expansions to become a modern and well-equipped international airport. In 2006, it was granted international airport status, and the first international flight operated from the airport in 2009.

The airport is spread across an area of about 674 acres and has a single runway with a length of 8,038 feet. It is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a modern terminal building, advanced navigation and surveillance systems, and efficient ground handling facilities. The airport can handle a range of aircraft, including narrow-body jets like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, and smaller planes used for regional and charter flights.

Mangalore International Airport plays a significant role in the connectivity and economic development of the region. It handles a significant amount of passenger traffic, including a large number of expatriates from the Gulf countries, as the airport is well-connected to various destinations in the Middle East. The airport also facilitates tourism in the coastal region, providing easy access to popular destinations like Kudremukh, Gokarna, and Jog Falls.

The airport has received several accolades and recognitions for its efficient operations and passenger-friendly initiatives. It has won awards for the best airport in its category and has been praised for its cleanliness, safety measures, and customer satisfaction. The airport also actively engages in community development programs and initiatives to improve the lives of people in the surrounding regions.

With its strategic location, modern infrastructure, and efficient operations, Mangalore International Airport is a vital gateway to Karnataka's coastal region, contributing to its growth and providing a boost to the state's economy. The airport's expansion and growing popularity among travellers bode well for its future as a key aviation hub in South India.

IXE is accredited by the Airports Council International

The Mangalore International Airport, also known as the Mangaluru International Airport (IATA: IXE, ICAO: VOML), is accredited by the Airports Council International (ACI) under the Airport Health Accreditation (AHA) programme. ACI is an organization that represents the collective interests of airports around the world. They work with governments, regional ACI members, experts, and international organizations to develop policies, programs, and best practices that promote excellence in the aviation industry.

The airport is located in the coastal city of Mangalore in the state of Karnataka, India. It is one of only two international airports in the state, the other being Kempegowda International Airport in the capital city of Bengaluru. Mangalore International Airport is the second busiest airport in the state, with flights departing daily for major cities in the Middle East and various domestic destinations.

The airport was initially named Bajpe Aerodrome when it opened on 25 December 1951, by the former and First Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who arrived on a Douglas DC-3 aircraft. It is situated on top of a hill, with two tabletop runways (09/27 and 06/24). The first runway (09/27), 1,615 m (5,299 ft) long, was opened in 1951 and presented a challenging landing approach due to its proximity to the extreme edges of a hillside.

The Mangalore Airport underwent renovations in the early 2000s, adding parking controls, additional seating, and cafes. The operation of international flights began in 2006, and it was granted the status of an international airport in 2012. The airport has since continued to develop and expand its facilities and services, striving for excellence in the aviation industry.

IXE has two tabletop runways, a unique feature

Mangalore International Airport (IATA: IXE) is located on top of a hill, with two tabletop runways (09/27 and 06/24). The first runway (09/27), 1,615 metres (5,299 feet) long, was opened in 1951. It is a tabletop runway, with landing approaches presented with the extreme edges of a hillside. The edges of the hill drop into a valley from a height of about 90 metres (300 feet) to 9 metres (30 feet) within a short distance of just 500 metres (1,600 feet) on the east of the runway and from about 83 metres (272 feet) to 25 metres (82 feet) on the western side. The runway was not level, with the height varying from 90 metres (300 feet) to 83 metres (272 feet) from east to west. Landing on this short runway was considered difficult.

The overall runway length has now been extended, and the risk on landing has been reduced compared to the previous distance. The new runway is 1,500 metres long (compared to the old one, which was only 900 metres) and can handle Airbus-300 aircraft. The longer runway can now handle slightly larger aircraft, such as the Airbus A310 and A319.

Only two other airports in India have tabletop runways: Kozhikode and Lengpui.
