Southwest Florida International Airport (IATA: RSW, ICAO: KRSW, FAA LID: RSW) opened on May 14, 1983, as Southwest Florida Regional Airport. The airport was constructed on a 3,500-acre site southeast of the City of Fort Myers, at a cost of $90 million.
The airport was originally served by nine domestic airlines: Continental, Delta, Eastern, Finair Express, Northwest, Ozark, Pan Am, Republic, and United. Delta operated the first flight. By 1985, American Airlines, People Express, Provincetown-Boston Airlines, Southern Express, and USAir had also joined the list of carriers serving RSW.
The airport has continued to grow over the last 40 years, both in terms of infrastructure and passenger numbers. In 1994, the airport welcomed its first flight to Europe, with LTU International introducing a route from Munich to Miami, via Düsseldorf and Fort Myers. This was in response to rising tourism from Germany, a market that Lee County had been cultivating due to the sizable German-American community in Southwest Florida.
In 1998, the original terminal was expanded with a new wing added to Concourse B, bringing the total number of gates to 17. Construction of a new Midfield Terminal Complex began in 2002, and it opened in 2005 at a cost of $438 million.
