San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) is a city-owned public airport in San Jose, California, located 3 miles (4.8 km) northwest of Downtown San Jose. The airport serves both the city and the Santa Clara Valley region of the greater Bay Area.
The history of the airport began in 1939 when Ernie Renzel, a future mayor of San Jose, led a group that negotiated to buy 483 acres of the Stockton Ranch from the Crocker family, to be the site of San Jose's airport. In 1945, test pilot James M. Nissen and two partners leased around 16 acres of this land to build a runway, hangar, and office building for a flight school. When San Jose decided to develop a municipal airport, Nissen sold his share and became the city's first airport manager. Renzel and Nissen were instrumental in the development of San Jose Municipal Airport, which culminated with the 1965 opening of what later became Terminal C. San Jose's first airline flights were operated by Southwest Airways in 1948, on the multistop route between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
In 1960, Radar and Associates recommended building an airport terminal to handle projected passenger numbers of 500,000 annually by 1967 and one million per year by 1970. They also suggested extending the existing runway by almost 3,000 feet. The following year, the west runway was extended by 2,500 feet to accommodate larger aircraft, and a new 4,400-foot east runway was added.
In 1974, San Jose Mayor Norman Y. Mineta was elected to Congress, representing San Jose and Silicon Valley. He was instrumental in obtaining funds for the airport and the region's public transportation system. In 1988, American Airlines opened a hub at San Jose, and in 1990, Terminal A was opened to accommodate this operation. In 1991, the company launched the airport's first direct link to Asia, a flight to Tokyo using McDonnell Douglas DC-10s.
In 2001, American Airlines commenced the airport's first transatlantic flight to Paris, using a Boeing 767.
