There are six airports that straddle the Canada-US border, including Piney Pinecreek Border Airport, which closed down in 2024 after serving both countries for over 70 years. The airport was located 2 nautical miles northwest of the central business district of Pinecreek, in Dieter Township, Roseau County, Minnesota, US, on the Canada–US border. It was jointly owned by the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the government of Piney, Manitoba, and shared by the rural communities of Piney, Manitoba, and Pinecreek, Minnesota.
The idea for the airport was conceived in 1949 by local resident and aviation enthusiast Eugene Simmons, who wanted to expedite cross-border general aviation traffic. The airport opened on July 29, 1953, with a grass runway that stopped just before the international border. In 1972, an extension was proposed to allow larger aircraft to operate, but this required extensive negotiation between local and national governments as it would cross the Canada-US border. The extended runway was finally dedicated in 1978, and the airport was declared the "world's first binational airport" by the New York Times in 1979.
Piney Pinecreek had two aprons that allowed passengers to deplane in either country and walk to their respective customs authority. Pilots and passengers in Canada had to walk across Provincial Trunk Route 89 to report to the Canada Border Services Agency, while the US border station was located on the airport side of Minnesota State Highway 89.
