A number of renovations and upgrades were carried out during the early 1950s, including the construction of a new terminal in 1951–1953 (which became Terminal 2), and both the east and west wings in 1959. Terminal 2 had ground-loading holding areas and was expanded in 1968 with an eight-gate satellite concourse, which was built to handle visitors to HemisFair '68. In 1971, the airport was one of three original destinations for new startup Southwest Airlines.
