The history of Wichita Airport can be traced back to 1924, when the largest airport in the city had three major terminals, including a move from the southeast to the southwest side of Wichita. In October 1924, Wichita hosted over 100,000 people for the National Air Congress, and the event raised funds for a proposed Wichita Municipal Airport. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the airport were held on June 28, 1929, and it was officially dedicated on March 31, 1935.
During World War II, in August 1941, the Kansas National Guard 127th Observation Squadron was activated as the first military unit assigned to the Wichita airport. In 1951, the United States Air Force announced its intention to establish a base in Wichita, and soon after, the USAF took over the Wichita Municipal Airport for pilot training. Construction began on what is now the Mid-Continent Airport, and by 1954, all non-military traffic, including commercial airline traffic, moved to this new airport.
The Wichita Municipal Airport was renamed the Wichita Air Force Base and later, in 1961, to McConnell Air Force Base. In 1973, the Mid-Continent Airport was renamed the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport after Kansas City renamed its airport to Kansas City International Airport.
