The airport is named after the famous American jazz singer and New Orleans native Louis Armstrong, whose 100th birthday fell in 2001.
In the mid-1930s, the City of New Orleans recognised that its municipal airport on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain was no longer large enough to meet the city's aviation needs. Expansion was considered too costly, so it was decided that a new airport would be built. However, the onset of World War II in 1941 delayed construction. During the war, the land that would become Moisant Field was used by the U.S. Government as an air base.
In 1946, the Federal Government returned the land to the City of New Orleans, and commercial service at Moisant Field began. Covering almost 1,400 acres, it immediately became one of the largest civil airports in the USA. A new terminal complex opened in 1959, and by the mid-1970s, the airport had expanded significantly, including the construction of Concourses A and B. In 1961, the airport's name was changed to New Orleans International Airport.
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Louisiana-Mississippi Gulf coastline, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The airport played a crucial role in evacuating over 30,000 people to safety, becoming the busiest airport in the world for three days. Commercial flights resumed in September 2005, and the new North Terminal opened in November 2019.
