Before the opening of the Southwest Florida Regional Airport, the Southwest Florida region was served by Page Field in Fort Myers. Several sites were considered for a new regional airport, including southern Charlotte County, Estero, and northeast Cape Coral near Burnt Store Marina. Eventually, the government of Lee County selected a site near the end of Daniels Parkway, which provided easy access to Interstate 75.
