The airport was renamed in 2021 to include the name of the Spanish poet and playwright, Miguel Hernández. The new name, Aeropuerto de Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández, was chosen to mark the 110th anniversary of the poet's birth. The change was approved by the Spanish government during celebrations of the poet's anniversary in el palacio del Temple de Valencia. The president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, announced the news during a tribute to the poet, where he read one of Hernández's poems.
The Minister of Public Works, José Luis Ábalos, said that the airport's new name would serve to "value the contribution [Miguel Hernández] has made to our culture and to increase the knowledge of his legacy." He added that "no country worth its salt condemns one of its essential poets to death and remains morally undamaged." The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, also expressed his delight at the announcement, calling it "a great opportunity to pay tribute to the goatherd poet."
The airport's previous name, Aeropuerto de Alicante–Elche, had been adopted in 2013 to include the city of Elche in recognition of its proximity to the airport. Before that, the airport was known as Aeropuerto de Alicante.
