San José Mineta International Airport, officially Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport, is a city-owned public airport in San Jose, California. The airport is located 3 miles (4.8 km) northwest of Downtown San Jose and serves the city and the Santa Clara Valley region of the greater Bay Area.
In 1941, World War II delayed the start of the airport's development. In 1944, Ernie Renzel, Jr. was elected to the San José City Council and served one year as "President of the Council", also known as Mayor. The following year, Jim Nissen leased 16 acres of SJC land for a small aviation business, "California Aviation Activities", and built the first dirt runway. General aviation was the airport's only function at the time.
In 1946, the city approved the development of the San José Municipal Airport and applied for federal aid to build the airport. The city authorized Southwest Airways to stop in San Jose on flights between San Francisco and Los Angeles for certain-size aircraft. Nissen sold his share of "California Aviation Airlines" and became the airport's first manager, with Renzel as Mayor. The official dedication ceremony of San Jose Municipal Airport took place on February 1, 1949.
In 1951, San Jose received an estimated $8,000 worth of radio equipment and a federal grant for runway expansion. The city was designated as the SF Bay Area Airport if San Francisco and Oakland were bombed. However, one of the biggest challenges was land acquisition. In 1961, the west runway was extended by 2,500 feet to accommodate larger aircraft, and a new 4,400-foot east runway was added.
