Orlando Sanford International Airport (IATA: SFB, ICAO: KSFB, FAA LID: SFB) is located in Sanford, Florida, United States, near Orlando. The airport is owned and operated by the Sanford Airport Authority. It was originally built as Naval Air Station Sanford, a Master Jet Base for carrier-based attack and reconnaissance aircraft. The airport was commissioned on November 3, 1942, and was used by the United States Navy as an important naval airbase until 1969. During this time, the base focused on advanced land-based patrol plane training.
In 1946, the City of Sanford assumed control of the airfield and renamed it Sanford Airfield. However, during the Korean War, the navy resumed using the airport and retained ownership until 1968. At this point, Sanford repurchased the airport for a nominal sum and began commercial flights. The airport was then known as Sanford Airport. For the next twenty-five years, it served as a general aviation facility and occasionally hosted civilian and military air shows and static displays.
In the 1970s, the control tower was reactivated as a non-FAA facility, employing retired Navy air traffic controllers. During this decade, the former OLF began to be used by drug-smuggling aircraft, leading to a major drug interdiction by law enforcement agencies. To deter future illegal use, Seminole County placed large speed bumps across the runways. By the 1980s, the county started using the site as a landfill, demolishing the remaining runways. Through the 1980s and 1990s, the oldest Navy buildings were demolished, while newer ones were renovated for civil use. New buildings and hangars were also constructed.
In the mid-1990s, a new passenger terminal capable of accommodating jet airliners was built, attracting many carriers that had previously been using Orlando International Airport. Today, Orlando Sanford International Airport continues to expand and enhance its services, covering 3,000 acres and offering fast and affordable air travel to passengers.
