Menderes was known for his pro-Western foreign policy stance while also trying to establish closer ties with Muslim states. He recognised the religious fervour of the Turkish populace and relaxed the official antipathy of the RPP towards some conservative manifestations of Islamic religious feeling. Despite the declining national economy, Menderes maintained his popularity, especially among the peasantry, and won the 1954 and 1957 elections.
However, the opposition to Menderes intensified, and on May 27, 1960, a military coup overthrew his government. Menderes was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death by hanging, along with other cabinet members. In 1990, the Parliament cleared him of any misconduct and pardoned him. Today, Izmir Airport and Adnan Menderes University in Aydin bear his name, honouring his legacy and contributions to Turkish democracy and politics.
