The history of the Halifax Municipal Airport dates back to the 1930s. The first airport in the Halifax Municipality was constructed in 1930 and was finished in December of that year at a cost of approximately $225,000. The airport received its first plane in September 1930, when Major T. H. Tudhope landed his Stearman biplane. The airport was granted a temporary operations licence in January 1931, and the Halifax Aero Club was chosen to operate the facility. Captain Donald W. Saunders, an instructor with the Halifax Flying Club and a veteran of World War I, was appointed as the airport's manager. Saunders played a significant role in the development of aviation in the Halifax area and was honoured with a park named after him, located on the site of the old airport.
The original airfield, known as Chebucto Field or Halifax Civic Airport, was built on the former site of Blueball Farm in the West End. It served as the city's main airport until 1941 when its licence was terminated, and the land was leased to the federal government as an army camp during World War II. After the war, the property was returned to the City of Halifax, and the search for a new civil airport site began.
