The history of Gatwick Airport Railway Station is closely tied to the development of Gatwick Airport itself. In 1935, Tinsley Green station was opened, which was later renamed Gatwick Airport Station. However, this station fell out of regular use after the opening of the nearby Gatwick Racecourse station in 1935, which was closer to the airport.
In 1940, the airport was requisitioned by the Royal Air Force (RAF) for military use. During this time, the Gatwick Racecourse station was renamed to reflect its association with the neighbouring racecourse. However, it fell out of use for a decade.
In the early 1950s, the government decided to expand the airport as London's second airport. As a result, the fortunes of the two stations reversed. The Gatwick Racecourse station was chosen to be integrated into the new airport terminal, and it was rebuilt to serve Gatwick Airport. On 27 May 1958, the rebuilt station opened as Gatwick Airport Railway Station, becoming the first in the UK to directly serve an airport.
The original 1958 facilities included a parcels office, lifts, and a corridor separated from the passenger corridor by a glazed partition. To accommodate longer trains, the platforms were raised and extended, except for the westernmost platform, which was shortened.
Gatwick Airport Railway Station has undergone several upgrades and renovations over the years. In 2018, Gatwick Airport announced a £1.11 billion expansion programme, which included the construction of a new concourse that began in November 2020. The refurbished station opened on 21 November 2023, with train services operated by Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink, and Great Western Railway.
