History

Rome's Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport, better known as Fiumicino, is located in Fiumicino, a town 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Rome's historic city centre. It is named after Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), who in 1480 designed the first proto-helicopter.

Fiumicino Airport officially opened on 15 January 1961, replacing the smaller Rome Ciampino Airport. However, it had been in use since 20 August 1960, five days before the start of the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, to relieve air traffic congestion at Ciampino Airport. The airport was designed to cope with increasing demand for flights to the Italian capital, merging the plans of Riccardo Morandi and Andrea Zavitteri with those of Amedeo Luccichenti and Vincenzo Monaco. Construction lasted 21 months, during which the remains of several ancient Roman ships were discovered.

In the 1960s, Fiumicino Airport consisted of two runways, with a third added in 1973, along with a new hangar to accommodate Boeing 747s. During this period, Alitalia, which was then Italy's largest airline, invested heavily in the airport, building hangars and maintenance centres. Fiumicino became the principal hub for Alitalia, which has since become defunct.

In the 2000s, Fiumicino Airport underwent upgrades to its terminals, including the addition of the dedicated Cargo City terminal in 2004. In 2010, a new single baggage handling system was introduced for more efficient luggage delivery.
