In August 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a drive-through Coronavirus test facility was set up at the airport. The airport itself had been closed since April 2020, and the test facility was established to support the Government's UK-wide drive to increase testing. Anyone experiencing COVID symptoms, no matter how mild, could apply for a free swab test, with results available the next day. Testing at the airport commenced on 26 August, with more appointments available each day.
The site was part of the largest network of diagnostic testing facilities created in British history, including 73 drive-through sites, 45 walk-through sites, 236 mobile units, home testing, satellite kits, and five laboratories. The testing centre was operated in partnership with Mitie and offered assisted and self-administered tests.
