Brive–Souillac Airport (BVE), also known as Brive–Dordogne Valley Airport, is an international airport located 13 kilometres (7.0 NM) south of Brive-la-Gaillarde, France. The airport caters to tourist movements into the Dordogne area. It replaced the former Brive–La Roche Airport, which was located west of the Brive-la-Gaillarde CBD and became unsuitable for modern aircraft and safety standards.
The idea for a new airport in Brive-la-Gaillarde was conceived in 1983 due to the limitations of the existing Brive–La Roche Airport. By 1987, a suitable 200-hectare site was found between Nespouls and Cressensac for the construction of the new airport. A syndicate was formed between the mayors of Brive-la-Gaillarde and Souillac to promote the project. The original plan was created in 1998 and updated in 2001 to extend the runway from 1.9 km to 2.1 km before construction.
The project faced delays due to legal challenges, political opposition, and environmental concerns. Various parties, including local communities and environmental organisations, regarded it as a large international project that exceeded local management capabilities. Other issues included the potential impact on public finances, opposition from Limoges Airport, noise pollution, and the presence of a large blue butterfly colony. Despite these challenges, earthworks commenced in October 2005 and concluded in spring 2007, involving the levelling and filling of the 2.8-million-cubic-metre limestone site.
The 2.1-kilometre runway, along with taxiways and aprons, was constructed in 2008, while the airport control tower and buildings were erected in 2009. The new Brive–Souillac Airport was officially inaugurated on June 15, 2010, marking the transition from the former Brive–La Roche Airport to the modern and internationally capable Brive–Souillac Airport.
