The Airtrain stations are located on the elevated Skywalk and are easily accessed using travellators directly in front of the domestic airport. The arrivals are on level 2, and the Airtrain is located on level 3 of the International Terminal. Simply follow the "trains" signs to level 3 using the travellators or lifts. Trolleys are available inside the terminals and can be used on the way to the Airtrain stations. However, for safety reasons, trolleys cannot be taken onto station platforms or trains. The line is owned and operated by Airtrain Citylink Limited, with financial backing from Transfield Services, Macquarie Bank, Colonial First State, and ABN AMRO. The first service ran on 5 May 2001. Airtrain Citylink has a licence from Queensland Transport under a BOOT scheme – build, own, operate and transfer – to build the rail line and own and operate it until 2036, when ownership will be passed to Queensland Rail.

Customers on the Gold Coast use the tram to connect to the Airtrain at Helensvale station.
