The airport has undergone expansion to enhance the reputation of the Hartford metropolitan area as a destination for business and vacation travel. In 2002, a new East Concourse and a new International Arrivals Building were opened, the latter housing the Federal Inspection Station. The International Arrivals Building can process more than 300 passengers per hour from aircraft as large as a Boeing 747. Hartford–Brainard Airport (IATA: HFD, ICAO: KHFD, FAA LID: HFD) is a public airport located in Hartford County, Connecticut, just 3 miles from the downtown business district. The airport is named after former Hartford Mayor Newton C. Brainard.
Hartford–Brainard Airport opened in 1921 on a 350-acre former cow pasture in the southeast Hartford neighbourhood of South Meadows. It has been called the country's first municipal airport. During its first decade, the airfield was used primarily for small passenger flights. However, in 1933, city officials opened Brainard to commercial traffic to stimulate the local economy during the Great Depression. This required the expansion of facilities and the replacement of grass runways with blacktop pavement.
Hartford–Brainard Airport was visited by some of the early 20th century's most renowned aviators, including Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh. During World War II, the airport served as a major training centre for pilots and aircrews of the United States Army Air Forces.
