The airport's history
The history of the Indianapolis International Airport can be traced back to 1928, when the city's leaders selected the site for a future municipal airport. At the time, the city of Indianapolis was served by the state-owned Cox Field (later known as Stout Field), but the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce and the Indianapolis City Council believed that the city should own its airport. After much discussion, a committee settled on the present site, and in 1929, the city purchased 320 acres on South High School Road for a landing area, with an additional 627 acres reserved for future expansion.
The airport, known as the Indianapolis Municipal Airport, officially opened in 1931, with Transcontinental Air Transport (which would later become Trans World Airlines) and American Airways as its first airlines. The airport was the first in the area with concrete runways. During the 1930s and 1940s, the airport underwent several name changes, eventually becoming the Weir Cook Municipal Airport in 1944, named after US Army Air Forces Col. Harvey Weir Cook, a flying ace during World War I who died in a plane crash in New Caledonia in 1943.
Over the years, the airport grew and expanded, with renovations and expansions taking place in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. In 1976, the airport was renamed the Indianapolis International Airport to coincide with the opening of a new building to serve international arrivals and departures. Since 1962, the airport has been owned and operated by the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA).
The airport has continued to expand and improve its facilities over the years, with new concourses, parking garages, and a world-class terminal opening in 2008. Indianapolis International Airport has been recognised as the Best Airport in North America on multiple occasions and has received LEED® certification for its entire terminal campus. Today, the airport sits on nearly 8,000 acres and handles a significant amount of passenger and cargo traffic, serving as a hub for several major airlines, including FedEx, which operates one of its largest hubs at the airport.
