The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, also known by its IATA code MSY, has a rich history that dates back to the early days of aviation. The airport is located in the City of Kenner, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, just 11 miles (18 km) west of downtown New Orleans.
The airport was originally named Moisant Field, after the daredevil aviator John Moisant (also known as John Bevins Moisant). Moisant, a French-Canadian immigrant, was an accomplished aviator who had built and flown the first all-metal frame aircraft made of aluminum in 1909. Sadly, he died in an airplane crash on December 31, 1910, on the agricultural land where the airport is now located. The owners of the land decided to honor him by calling the stock yards the Moisant Stock Yards, or MSY for short. This name was later used as the airport's IATA code.
During World War II, the land became a government air base. After the war, it returned to civil control, and commercial service commenced in May 1946. However, the airport faced an early setback when it was shut down in September 1947 due to flooding caused by the 1947 Fort Lauderdale Hurricane. Commercial service resumed in 1948, and a new terminal complex was inaugurated in 1959. The terminal was expanded in the 1970s, and two new concourses were added in the 1990s and 2000s.
In July 2001, the airport was renamed the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport to honor the 100th anniversary of the renowned jazz musician's birth. The airport suffered significant damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, forcing it to close temporarily.
