Orlando Sanford International Airport (IATA: SFB, ICAO: KSFB, FAA LID: SFB) was once a Naval Air Station (NAS) used by the US Navy. The airport is located in Sanford, Florida, approximately 20 miles north of Orlando, and was commissioned as an active naval installation on November 3, 1942.
Before its life as an international airport, the Sanford Airport was an 865-acre civilian airfield with two runways owned by the City of Sanford. On June 11, 1942, the city deeded the facility to the US Navy, and it was commissioned as Naval Air Station Sanford a few months later, on November 3, 1942. NAS Sanford was initially assigned the airport codes NRJ and KNRJ. The base focused on advanced land-based patrol plane training, operating PV-1 Venturas, PBO Hudsons, and SNB-2 Kansans. The base also held oversight of an auxiliary airfield known as Outlying Field Osceola (OLF Osceola), located about 11 km southeast of NAS Sanford.
