Birmingham New Street, also known as New Street Station, is the largest and busiest of Birmingham's three main railway stations. AirRail Link
The AirRail Link is a cable-propelled shuttle system that connects Birmingham Airport with the nearby Birmingham International train station. The shuttle system uses Cable Liner technology from Doppelmayr Cable Car and replaced an earlier automated system that operated from 1984 to 1995. The original system was fully automated and used an elevated concrete guideway, with propulsion and braking provided by linear induction motors. It had a maximum capacity of 3,200 passengers per hour in either direction, with a journey time of 90 seconds and a maximum speed of 40 miles per hour. However, it was discontinued in 1995 due to a lack of spare parts and obsolescence issues. After its closure, a temporary shuttle bus service was operated until the current Air-Rail Link system was opened in 2003.
The replacement project, valued at £10 million, involved multiple companies, including Babtie, Shaw and Morton for design work, Siemens for mechanical and electrical systems, and Fitzpatrick for civil engineering work.
