Fiumicino has been targeted by two terrorist attacks
Fiumicino, also known as Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, has been the target of two terrorist attacks. The first attack took place in December 1973, when a Palestinian military organization called Fatah executed a series of attacks originating at the airport. The attacks began with an airport terminal invasion and hostage-taking, followed by the firebombing of a Pan Am aircraft and the hijacking of a Lufthansa flight. As a result, 34 people lost their lives, with 30 deaths on the Pan Am flight and two in the terminal.
The second attack occurred on 27 December 1985 and was one of two simultaneous attacks on airports in Rome and Vienna. At Fiumicino, four Arab gunmen attacked the shared ticket counter for Israel's El Al Airlines and Trans World Airlines, firing assault rifles and throwing grenades. Sixteen people were killed, and 99 were wounded in the attack, including American diplomat Wes Wessels. Three of the attackers were killed by El Al security, and the remaining one, Mohammed Sharam, was captured by the Italian police.
The 1985 attacks came after increased security and official Interpol warnings that airports might be targeted by terrorists during the holiday season. Italian authorities discovered that the terrorists had entered Italy a few weeks prior and stayed in hotels near Rome. They all held Moroccan passports, and a note found on one of the attackers was addressed to "Zionists," announcing that "the war has begun" and signed "the martyrs of Palestine." While Israeli authorities initially blamed the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), its leader, Yasser Arafat, denied the accusations. Responsibility for the attacks was later claimed by the Abu Nidal Organization (ANO) in retaliation for the Israeli bombing of PLO headquarters in Tunis earlier that year.
