Suvarnabhumi Airport (IATA: BKK, ICAO: VTBS) is the main international airport serving Bangkok, Thailand. Krabi International Airport (IATA: KBV, ICAO: VTSG) is located in Nuea Khlong subdistrict, Nuea Khlong district, Krabi province in southern Thailand. It is approximately 7 kilometres (4 mi) east of downtown Krabi. The airport, which opened in 1999, was designed to accommodate three million passengers annually, but it has already exceeded that number, with 2.3 million passengers passing through in 2023, making it the sixth busiest airport in the country. In 2017, the airport handled over 4.3 million passengers. To address the increasing passenger numbers, the airport has undergone expansion plans to increase its capacity to eight million passengers per year. In 2018, the airport received funding to build a third terminal, renovate the existing two terminals, expand aircraft parking bays, and enhance electrical power infrastructure.
Krabi International Airport has experienced challenges with electricity supply. On February 10, 2016, the terminal faced a six-hour power outage due to maintenance work in the area. While backup generators were available, they failed to function. As a result, the airport management decided to rent generators to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The airport's expansion plans are limited due to space constraints and the city's expansion. A new international airport has been proposed in Phang Nga province, expected to be completed by 2025, which will provide an alternative to Krabi Airport.
