The majority of the land in the suburb is occupied by the Brisbane Airport, which is the largest airport in Australia by land area. The airport covers an area of 2,700 hectares (6,700 acres).
Brisbane Airport has a rich history that dates back to the early days of aviation in Australia. The airport first began operations in 1926 when Qantas started flying from the site. However, most flights in Brisbane operated out of Archerfield Airport, which had a superior landing surface. Despite this, Brisbane Airport was still used by notable aviators such as Charles Kingsford Smith, who landed at the airport in 1928 after completing the first trans-Pacific flight in his Fokker F.VII, the "Southern Cross".
During World War II, Brisbane Airport played a significant role as a military airfield. It was used as a launching pad for Allied forces into Asia and was upgraded by the United States Armed Forces to cater to military flights. By the 1960s, the facilities at the airport had become inadequate for a city of Brisbane's size and anticipated growth.
In June 1980, construction began on a new airport immediately north-east of the existing Eagle Farm Airport. The new airport was built by the Barclay Brothers at a cost of $400 million and opened on 19 March 1988, with a new domestic terminal and two runways. The opening was a significant event hosted by Prime Minister Bob Hawke.
Since then, Brisbane Airport has continued to grow and expand. In 1997, the airport was privatised and acquired by the Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) for $1.4 billion. BAC has invested heavily in the airport, including a $1.1 billion project that began in 2012 and officially opened in July 2020, creating thousands of jobs. Brisbane Airport is now a major hub for airlines such as Qantas and Virgin Australia and serves more than 22.7 million passengers annually.
