The 466th Air Service Group, the first USAAF transport unit assigned to Rhein-Main, was activated on 20 November 1945 and operated a mix of aircraft for transport operations.
In 1948, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' rail and road access to West Berlin, which was under Allied control. This prompted the 7405th and 7580th missions to conduct covert reconnaissance flights through the West Berlin Air Corridors.
