Mallorca's main airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), is located 8 kilometres (5 miles) east of the island's capital city, Palma. It is also known as Son Sant Joan Airport. During the summer months, it is one of the busiest airports in Europe, serving over 33 million passengers annually.
Mallorca's first aircraft arrived in 1921, when Aeromarítima Mallorquina began delivering mail from Barcelona using seaplanes that took off and landed in the port of Palma de Mallorca. In 1934, Aero-Taxi de Mallorca was created to bring tourists to Mallorca from the mainland, and they opened a flight school at the existing aerodrome in Son Sant Joan. The first scheduled service began in August 1935 between Palma and Madrid, with a stopover in Valencia. In 1938, as many as nine fighter bombers took off from the airfield at Son Bonet to bomb the Republican-held city of Alicante.
By the 1950s, Mallorca was becoming a popular tourist destination, and the runway at Son Sant Joan was lengthened and paved to accommodate military jets. Today, Palma de Mallorca Airport consists of four modules: Module A (formerly Terminal A), Module B (formerly Terminal B), and the newer Modules C and D, which were opened in 1997. The airport can handle 25 million passengers per year and is served by many major airlines.
