The airport is named after Albert Bond Lambert, an Olympic medallist and prominent St. Louis aviator. In June 1920, a 170-acre field was leased to the Missouri Aeronautical Society, which established the "St. Louis Flying Field". Albert Bond Lambert was a leading member of the society, and in 1923, the field was renamed the "Lambert-St. Louis Flying Field" in recognition of his vigorous efforts to promote St. Louis aviation. In 1925, Lambert purchased the field and added hangars and a passenger terminal.
Lambert-St. Louis International Airport rose to prominence in the 20th century due to several factors. One significant reason was its association with Charles Lindbergh, who began his piloting career by flying airmail from the airfield.
