In June 1920, the Missouri Aeronautical Society leased a nearby 170-acre field and established the "St. Louis Flying Field." Albert Bond Lambert, a leading member of the Society, played a pivotal role in promoting St. Louis aviation. As a result, in 1923, the field was renamed the "Lambert-St. Louis Flying Field." Lambert purchased the field in February 1925 and made significant improvements, including adding hangars and a passenger terminal. In 1928, Lambert sold the airport to the City of St. Louis, making it one of the first municipally-owned airports in the United States.
During World War II, the airport became a manufacturing base for the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and Curtiss-Wright. After the war, the airport expanded its facilities and airline operations, with Ozark Air Lines commencing operations in 1950. In 1953, Minoru Yamasaki was commissioned to design a new terminal to accommodate the increasing passenger traffic.
