The airport's name was conceived in 1928 by J. Parker Van Zandt
The aviation pioneer J. Parker Van Zandt is the reason we have Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport today. Born in 1894 in Illinois, Van Zandt was a pilot in World War I with the U.S. Army Signal Corps. After the war, he continued flying and worked for a time in California, flying over forests to spot fires. In 1927, he joined the Civil Aeronautics Administration, where he set up Federal licensing for civilian aviators.
During that same year, Van Zandt accepted a job with the Ford Motor Company as general manager and chief pilot of its demonstration airline. While working for Ford, he was assigned to fly an airplane from Detroit to California to deliver it to its new owner. On the way, Van Zandt refuelled at the Grand Canyon. Seeing the canyon from the air changed his life. Soon after, he negotiated a deal with the Fred Harvey Company to fly tourists over the Grand Canyon.
Van Zandt purchased farmland on the outskirts of Phoenix, where he built an airfield and a training school. He founded Scenic Airways in 1928, the same year the airport opened. The airport was initially called Sky Harbor Airport, and it was sold to local investors when the Great Depression started the following year. The City of Phoenix purchased it in 1936 for $100,000 after American Airlines threatened to stop passenger and mail service unless the city bought it.
Van Zandt continued to work in aviation for much of his life. He passed away in 1990 at the age of 96. Today, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is Arizona's largest and busiest airport, serving as a hub for American Airlines and a base for Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
