The history of Newark Airport dates back to the 1920s when Newark was home to two airfields: Heller Field, which opened in 1919, and Hadley Field, which opened in 1924. Both airfields were used by the United States airmail service, but by 1927, the U.S. Postal Service sought an airfield closer to New York City.
