Located on the southwestern shore of Long Island, in Queens, New York City, JFK borders Jamaica Bay and is the busiest airport in the New York airport system. The airport covers 5,200 acres (2,104 ha) and is the largest in the New York metropolitan area.
The airport, which opened in 1948 as New York International Airport, was commonly known as Idlewild Airport, after the Idlewild Beach Golf Course that it displaced. It was built to relieve LaGuardia Field, which had become overcrowded since its opening in 1939. In late 1941, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia announced that the city had chosen a large area of marshland on Jamaica Bay for the airport's site. However, financial, access, and labour issues, as well as disputes over rents charged to airlines, delayed the opening until July 1, 1948, with the official dedication coming on July 31. The airport's first commercial arrival was a Peruvian International Airlines flight from Santiago, Chile, on July 9, 1948.
The opening ceremony was attended by an estimated 215,000 spectators from around the world, including 500 journalists. The ceremony included a $10 million military exhibit featuring bombers, jet fighters, and other military aircraft, as well as addresses by President Harry S. Truman and Governor Thomas Dewey. Unfortunately, Mayor La Guardia, the driving force behind the airport's construction, passed away six months before the opening.
In its first full year of operation, 1949, the airport handled 222,620 passengers and 18,115 aircraft movements. By the late 1950s, $235 million had been spent on developing Idlewild, and in 1958, the airport entered the 'Jet Age' with the introduction of the Boeing 707. Over time, additional modifications were made, including the construction of the AirTrain JFK rapid transit system, which began in 1998 and was completed in 2003. The system provides a direct rail link to the airport, connecting all terminals to the New York City Subway and the Long Island Rail Road at Howard Beach and Jamaica.
Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, the airport was renamed in his honour.
