History
Hamburg Airport (IATA: HAM, ICAO: EDDH) is one of the world's oldest commercial airports and the oldest international airport in Germany. It was established on 10 January 1911 and was originally built on the outskirts of the city. The airport was initially an airship hangar for two Zeppelins, which was demolished after the First World War.
In 1920, the first scheduled flights began, with destinations such as Berlin, Amsterdam, and Sylt. During the Berlin Airlift from June 1948 to May 1949, Hamburg Airport served as one of the take-off points for the "raisin bombers". Lufthansa launched passenger operations in 1955, using Hamburg as a hub until Frankfurt Airport took over due to growth constraints. In October 1959, Pan American World Airways was the first airline to start scheduled service with jet aircraft to Hamburg, flying the route New York–London–Hamburg–Copenhagen with the Boeing 707.
In the 1960s, discussions began to move the airport to Heidmoor near Kaltenkirchen due to limited expansion possibilities, capacity constraints, and noise concerns. However, these plans were dropped due to negative experiences in other cities where airports had been moved far from city centres, and Lufthansa's move to Frankfurt.
