If you're travelling from Midtown Manhattan, you can take an NJ Transit train and the AirTrain. The NJ Transit fare from Newark Penn Station to the airport is $11.95, and the AirTrain is normally $8.50, though it is included in your NJ Transit ticket when you're travelling to and from the airport. The AirTrain connects with all terminals, as well as parking, rental car, and hotel services. It is free to use within the airport.
If you're travelling from Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn and you don't mind a couple of transfers, you can take the PATH, an NJ Transit train, and the AirTrain. If you want to keep it simple, take the subway to Midtown Manhattan and transfer to an NJ Transit train and the AirTrain. If you want to save on fares, take the PATH train to Newark Penn Station and transfer to an NJ Transit bus. The fare for the PATH train is $3, and the #62 bus is $1.80.
NJ Transit trains are not 24/7 and run between 5 am and 1 am. For 24-hour service, take the PATH train and NJ Transit's #62 bus.
You can also get to the airport by taxi, car, or shuttle. Taking a taxi will be the most expensive option, with a ride to downtown Manhattan costing at least $65. Newark Airport first opened on 1 October 1928, under the name Newark Metropolitan Airport. It was built on 68 acres of marshland and its first terminal, the Art Deco Administration Building, was built in 1934. The airport was constructed adjacent to Port Newark and U.S. Route 1. During its early years, Newark was the only airport serving the New York area and was considered the busiest commercial airport in the world.
In 1935, the airport's first terminal was dedicated by Amelia Earhart and, in 1937, construction began on the Brewster Hangar, which was the most advanced of its time. In 1939, LaGuardia Airport opened in Queens, providing competition to Newark. During World War II, the airport was taken over by the United States Army for logistics operations and closed to commercial flights.
When Newark reopened in 1946, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took control of it. In 1948, an instrument runway, a new terminal building, a control tower, and an air cargo centre were constructed. In 1952, Newark became the first airport to allow nighttime operations after installing runway lights. The North Terminal opened in 1953, replacing the original Administration Building as the airport's terminal.
In 1979, the Brewster Hangar was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1980, the airport's original 1935 Administration Building was also recognised. The airport underwent significant expansion in the 1980s, with a monorail system connecting the three terminals and other facilities opening in 1996. In 2001, the monorail was extended to the Newark Airport train station and renamed AirTrain Newark.
In 2002, the airport's name was changed from Newark International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport to honour the victims of the September 11 attacks and to pay tribute to the Statue of Liberty, which sits 7 miles (11 km) east of the airport.
