The airport was constructed on a partially forested moorland area
In 1943, the government of the canton of Zurich commissioned a study to identify possible locations to construct a major airport. In its report, a consortium of engineers and architects recommended a separate civil airport in the partially forested moorland area of the armoury situated between Kloten and Oberglatt. This area, known as the Kloten-Bülach Artillery Garrison, was sold to the canton of Zurich in 1945, and construction of the airport began shortly thereafter.
The decision to build the airport in this location was not without controversy. Some had argued for expanding the existing air facilities at Dübendorf, located just southeast of what would become Zurich Airport. However, the consortium of engineers and architects advised against this option, citing the need for a separate civil airport. The Federal Military Department agreed to abandon the armoury in the interest of national security, and the project eventually gained the support of the federal government, which deemed it "far superior" to other proposed airport projects.
The construction of Zurich Airport (also known as Kloten Airport) involved the development of an area of 655 hectares (1,620 acres). The initial plans included four runways, with a total required area of 472 hectares (1,170 acres).
