Davis–Monthan AFB is best known as the location of the Air Force Materiel Command's 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309 AMARG), which is the sole aircraft boneyard for excess military and U.S. government aircraft, as well as other aerospace vehicles such as ballistic missiles. The wing also conducts all formal course-directed aircraft initial qualification and re-qualification training.
The base played a post-war role by housing German POWs from June 1945 to March 1946, and it served as a separation centre, bringing the base population to a high of 11,614 in September 1945. With the end of the war, the base was selected as a storage site for decommissioned aircraft, under the oversight of the 4105th Army Air Force Unit. The Cold War era began at Davis–Monthan on 21 March 1946, when the base was placed under the Strategic Air Command (SAC).
