History of the airport

History of Tampa International Airport

Tampa International Airport (IATA: TPA, ICAO: KTPA, FAA LID: TPA) is located just five to six miles west of downtown Tampa on the east shore of Tampa Bay in Florida, United States. Tampa Bay is known for being the birthplace of commercial airline service, with the first scheduled commercial airline flight in the world using a heavier-than-airplane taking place from St. Petersburg to Tampa on January 1, 1914.

In 1928, the city of Tampa completed the 160-acre Drew Field, six miles west of downtown Tampa. It was named after local developer John H. Drew, the former owner of the land. During World War II, the United States Army Air Corps began negotiating for the use of Drew Field in 1939 and in 1940, the City of Tampa leased it to the U.S. Government for 25 years. The airfield was renamed Drew Army Airfield and was used as a training center for 120,000 combat air crews.

After World War II, Drew Field was returned to the City of Tampa and became the main Tampa airport, with airlines moving there from the Peter O. Knight Airport, which had opened in 1935. The airport's second terminal opened in 1952, and by the late 1950s, it was becoming crowded. Turbine-powered flights began in 1959, and in 1960, jet flights were introduced. By the early 1960s, the aviation authority began planning a replacement terminal, and in 1971, a new terminal complex was opened, featuring the world's first automated people movers.

Today, Tampa International Airport continues to be praised for its efficient design and convenience, with over 100 non-stop destinations across multiple carriers.
