Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport's history
The Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport is the second-largest airport in Mississippi, welcoming nearly 800,000 travellers each year. The airport covers an area of 1,400 acres at an elevation of 28 feet above mean sea level.
The airport was originally built in 1942 by the United States Army Air Forces as a training base for the Air Corps Flying Training Command. Gulfport Army Airfield opened on July 7, 1942, and conducted technical training and basic training. With the end of World War II and the subsequent military drawdown, Gulfport AAF was placed into reserve status in 1946 and later conveyed to the City of Gulfport in 1949 for use as a civil airport.
Due to the Cold War, a new lease was obtained for military use, and the Gulfport Air Force Base was opened as a joint-use civil-military facility. Gulfport AFB was eventually closed as an active Air Force installation, and its military facilities were transferred to the Mississippi Air National Guard. The airport continued to be used as a joint-use airport and Air National Guard base.
The Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport Authority was established in 1977 by the Cities of Gulfport and Biloxi, along with Harrison County. Through the late 1970s, Southern Airways served as the primary airline, followed by Republic Airlines and Northwest Airlines in the following decades.
The airport suffered severe damage from Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, and was closed for repairs. It reopened for first responder flights on August 30 and for commercial flights on September 8. An extensive renovation was completed in 2007.
