In the 1950s, the stretch of I-85 between the southern merge with I-75 and North Druid Hills Road was a four- to six-lane expressway. This was later widened as part of the Georgia Department of Transportation's Freeing the Freeways program.
I-20, I-75, and I-85 all intersect in downtown Atlanta. I-20 approaches from the east, merging with I-85 at the southern edge of downtown Atlanta. I-85 approaches from the southwest, merging with I-75 to form the Downtown Connector.
From Downtown Atlanta, you can reach the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport by taking I-75/85 South. Keep right to take I-85 South via EXIT 242 toward Domestic/Montgomery. Take the Virginia Ave exit, EXIT 73, toward College Park. Keep right to take the ramp toward College Park. Merge onto Virginia Avenue and turn right onto Howell Slade Circle, then take the first right onto Main Street.
