Covering 680 acres (280 hectares) as of January 1, 2025, the facility was established in 1929 and began operating as a public airport in 1939. It is named after Fiorello H. La Guardia, a former mayor of New York City.
The ground that LaGuardia Airport stands on was first used for the Gala Amusement Park, owned by the Steinway family, the founders of the world-renowned Steinway and Sons piano company. The park was sold and torn down in 1929, and the space was converted into a 105-acre private airfield. The airport was initially christened the Glenn H. Curtiss Airport, in honour of the renowned American aviation pioneer. It was renamed the North Beach Airport in 1935.
In 1934, Mayor La Guardia publicly appealed for the transformation of the North Beach Airport into an airport for commercial flights. The idea was initially met with criticism, and military and shipping concerns prevented La Guardia's preferred choice of Governors Island from becoming a reality. However, the North Beach Airport soon became the focus for a new commercial airfield, with over $20 million invested in the project.
The New York Municipal Airport-LaGuardia Field was dedicated on October 15, 1939, and officially opened for business on December 2, 1939.
