Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND)
The airport covers 1,522 hectares (3,761 acres) of land and features three terminal buildings. Terminal 1 is primarily used by JAL, while Terminal 2 is mainly used by ANA and also handles some international ANA flights. Terminal 3 handles most of the airport's international flights and offers a range of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Terminal 3 is also open 24 hours, which can be convenient for budget travelers. Each terminal has a hotel inside, and there are two additional Villa Fontaine hotels located in the Haneda Airport Garden complex, connected to Terminal 3.
Haneda Airport first opened in 1931 on a small piece of reclaimed land at the west end of today's airport complex. It initially featured a 300-metre (980 ft) concrete runway, a small airport terminal, and two hangars. During World War II, the airport shifted to primarily military transport services and flight training for the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. After the war, Haneda resumed its role as Tokyo's primary airport until 1978 when Narita Airport took over most international air traffic. From 1978 to 2010, Haneda handled almost all of Tokyo's domestic flights and some "scheduled charter" flights to East and Southeast Asian cities. In 2010, Haneda opened a dedicated international terminal (Terminal 3) and a fourth runway, allowing long-haul flights to operate at night. The airport resumed daytime long-haul services in 2014, with nonstop flights to 25 cities in 17 countries.
Passengers can easily access downtown Tokyo from Haneda Airport via the "LAX FlyAway" bus service, limousine buses departing from Tokyo Station, or the Tokyo Monorail and Keikyu Railway from Hamamatsucho Station and Shinagawa Station, respectively.
