Russ McDonald Field
The history of the airport dates back to the fall of 1946 when Heber City acquired land for an airport but lacked the funds for development. Progress stalled until 1947, when a group of local residents, including Russell McDonald, formed the Heber Valley Flying Service, Inc. With a $10,000 loan, they constructed a 3,300-foot runway, access roads, a hangar, and an office building. They also installed a power line and buried a water tank, laying the foundation for the airport.
Russell McDonald played a pivotal role in the airport's establishment. He served as the chief flight instructor, head mechanic, and general manager when the corporation commenced operations in September 1947. During its early years, the airport catered to World War II veterans learning to fly under the GI Bill. The airport received its first major improvement in 1949 with funding from the Federal Aviation Funding program, extending and paving the runway and enhancing the surrounding infrastructure.
Today, the airport can accommodate most corporate jet aircraft and features 54 hangars and over 100 planes. Salt Lake City International Airport
The airport is owned by the City of Salt Lake and is administered by the municipal Department of Airports. It has a single terminal with two concourses connected by two underground tunnels, for a total of 73 gates.
