Dallas has two airports: Dallas Love Field Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. DAL, or Dallas Love Field Airport, is the birthplace and headquarters of Southwest Airlines.
Southwest Airlines was founded in 1966 by Herbert Kelleher and Rollin King, and it was incorporated as Air Southwest Co. in 1967. The company was established as an intrastate airline, flying a Texas Triangle network between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. In the years that followed, Southwest Airlines faced opposition from other airlines and political interests, including American Airlines, which did not want direct low-fare competition from Southwest at DFW.
